Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Republican, vs. VaLinda Hathcox, Democrat - A former state senator, Patterson is completing his first term as land commissioner. He has done an outstanding job seeking to maximize the state's Permanent School Fund, which provides the foundation for paying for public education in Texas. He has championed the state's services for veterans, including the home and land loan program, state veterans homes and, now, state veterans cemeteries. He has been a leader in developing wind energy as a viable alternative, and he continues to promote beach cleanup.

Hathcox is the first woman elected Hopkins County attorney. Much of what she pledges to do, Patterson already is doing, and she offers little more that she hopes to accomplish.

The Eagle recommends a vote for Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson for re-election.
