- Land commissioner, Jerry Patterson
During Patterson's tenure, he has emphasized protection of the state's coastline and services for Texas veterans. Last year the General land Office earned a record $1.35 billion for the Permanent School Fund. With the state's mineral deposits declining, Patterson, a Republican, has pioneered creative but safe real estate deals to add revenue for education. Wal-Mart's state-owned distribution center in Baytown, which provides both jobs for Texans and high profits for the state, and innovative offshore wind generation leases are examples of Patterson's performance. He has earned re-election to another term.
